The
Leader In Training program is designed for those campers prepared to
be a role model to both campers and peers while learning leadership skills.
Those eligible to apply are campers between their sophomore and junior
year of high school. It is a four-week program during Sessions 6, 7,
8 and 9. Each participant is given time off every Saturday at noon to
Sunday at noon where they are required to leave the ranch for some needed
rest and relaxation due to their busy daily schedule and lack of free
time during the week.
The
LIT program, like the camp setting, is structured so one learns by doing
in a safe environment. During each session, participants will be assigned
to a counselor and cabin of campers to shadow during meals, free time,
coffee breaks and evening activities allowing them the opportunity to
develop their leadership skills while learning the characteristic traits
of different age groups. They spend four of the eight daily classes in
the camp program according to their ranks at Rawhide while still having
the opportunity to participate in the weekly Horse Show. The other half
of their day is divided between LIT classes and assisting in the classes
and electives offered to campers. The LIT classes along with the structure
of this program will focus on communication; teamwork; empathy; responsibility;
respect; creativity; conflict resolution and problem solving. Weekly
evaluations are done so participants can learn their strengths while
setting tangible goals for developing the areas where they may not be
as strong. Our goal is to have participants emerge from the program having
developed leadership skills along with an increased level of confidence
so they can apply these skills at school and in their community to make
a positive difference.
We encourage all those prepared to take on the additional
responsibility and challenges of leadership to submit an application,
parent/guardian reference and three personal references from teachers,
coaches, religious leaders and/or an employer. Please note close friends
of the family are not the best option or sufficient for our purposes.
Individual interviews will be arranged in spring and applicants will
then be notified of their acceptance in the program after all interviews
have been completed. The entire process is excellent preparation for
a job and/or the college application process one will encounter later
in life.
Fee for the LIT Program: $1,730
total.
The program runs from sessions 6, 7, 8 and 9 from July 20 to August 16 for a
total of fourweeks. You must be able to attend all four sessions.
These dates
are NOT flexible. |
Unfortunately, we have a limited number of spaces in
our program so not all who apply are accepted. One should not simply
apply because they
hope to extend their camper experience but rather because they have a
strong interest in learning how to be a terrific leader of children while
developing their own leadership skills. All those invited to participate
should understand the opportunity is a privilege and approach it with
enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.
